META
Tag Creation
What are Meta Tags?
This is a question that we are regularly asked. The
answer, of course, covers a wide range of search
engine optimisation strategies. Quite simply, a Meta
Tag is an 'invisible' collection of text within the
header of your HTML code which is imbedded before
the main body of the page, that you see on screen,
begins.
Meta Tags are created
for the sole purpose of allowing search engine
'robots' and 'crawlers', which trawl the internet
looking for new web pages and code to list on any
number of search engines, to instantly understand
what your website is about. It helps search engines
to index your pages and to determine whether your
site and pages are relevant to a searcher's keyword
criteria.
While most search
engines search the main body of text within a
webpage, most major search engines such as Google
and Yahoo take into account the content of the Meta
Tags, which includes the following information:
-
Keywords -
describing your web page which are used to match
the search criteria of a searcher on their
search engine
-
Page title -
search engines rely heavily on the content of
page titles. If keywords or phrases are included
in the title then it is more likely that your
page will be presented in the top 50 search
results
-
Page description
- this information is searched for keywords and
relevant information based on search criteria
and is displayed on the search page directly
beneath the page title.
-
Image Tags -
describing the content or relevant of images
used on your page is now becoming important in
search engine criteria
